Perspective On Making Goals
Life can be full of confusion and unexpected events. Being busy seems to be valued these days, but what about being effective? Most people start with a dream, but are easily distracted by the everyday hubbub.
I am a goal setter. It is who I inherently am and I set goals for all areas of my life. For some, the whole process of setting goals might seem tedious, but to me, it gives a huge sense of personal accomplishment and satisfaction.
A high-quality goal should be measureable and realistic so it is obvious when the goal finish- line has been reached. There are three main areas of my life where I set goals:
Personal Goals
My personal goals are usually related to exercise, taking time for myself, and my attitude. I think about the person I want to be for myself and the way I interact with others.
Professional Goals
When setting professional goals, I think about what level I would like to reach in my business. I also reflect on whether I need to further my knowledge and how I can accomplish learning what I need to learn. Signing up for a class, talking with a mentor, or reading books are all ways I can gain more knowledge.
Relationship Goals
Relationship goals are intertwined with personal and professional goals, but I like to think of them as a separate category. These goals can be related to family, friends, significant other or public service. I think about whether I have an acceptable balance in my life.
There are a few steps I follow for goal setting so they become achievable. I do not want my goals to end up like most New Year's Resolutions, which oftentimes end up on the wayside.
- I ponder where I need to make changes in my life and brainstorm positive and realistic objectives for myself.
- My trusty pen and paper is where I go next so I can write down my goals and prioritize them.
- Then, I set smaller goals to reach my larger goals. I give myself a time restraint so my goal won't last forever.
- After achieving a goal, I celebrate and start at step one.
